Buscemi
is a small village on the Iblean Plateau, about 2500 feet above sea
level.
Clinging to a
little hillside, it is shaped like a natural theatre and
dominates the Valley of the Anapo River. Nearby are the ruins
of the ancient cities of Akrai and Casmene, as well as
the Necropolis of Pantalica.

Buscemi's
historical roots go back to the Bronze Age. Traces of human
presence go back to the Byzantine period, when a group of
primitive cave-dwelling people came together on the hillside, the
site of today's Buscemi.

The earliest
historical records we have, when the place appears to be called
Qal'at Abu Samah, date from the Arab period. We
subsequentili find the town referred to by the names of "Abu Xamah", "Abuxama", "Abisama", "Buxemma"
and "Bussema".

begins after the earthquake of 1693 when the town was reconstructed
on the same site with remarkable examples of religious and civic
architecture in the Baroque Style.
